On May 14th, the Rainforest Biodiversity Group held its 5th annual spring Bird-a-Thon to raise money to support the organization and its conservation work in Costa Rica. This year’s goal was $3,000, and we are happy to report that we exceeded this goal by raising $4,004! There were 11 participating birders and over 40 dono
rs who made pledges.
Another Bird-a-Thon record broken in this year’s event included an amount raised by a single birder - $1,725 by Chris Petherick. Way to go Chris!
Similar to last year, the prize for the birder who raised the most funds is a $225 gift certificate to Eagle Optics, which hands down goes to Chris! All birders and any donor who pledged $50 or more received a free t-shirt with the 2011 Bird-a-Thon logo, shown here.
Over the course of the 5 years of the Bird-a-Thon, birders have seen a total of 215 different species, up from 188 species as of last year. 174 of these species were seen this year. 83 of these, or 47.7%, are found on the Costa Rican Bird Route. To see the species seen during the history of the Bird-a-Thon please go to the Bird-a-Thon Historical Stats Sheet.
